  • Driving to customers place of residence or business
  • Install home appliances (dryer, washer)
  • Properly attach major appliances to water, gas, or electrical lines
  • Clearly inspect non-functioning equipment

Appliance Repair School and Training

Appliance Repair TechnicianAppliance repair technicians learn their skills on the job by working alongside other experienced technicians but, some companies and appliance manufacturers do provide training through coursework. The introductory training program in electricity or electronics may last a few months to a few years, depending on the employer and the applied specialty. In some cases manufacturers also require that repair technicians also receive training to become authorized for appliance warranty work.

Although old fashioned on-the-job training is the most common and tried and true method of appliance repair training, employers are continuing to hire workers who have completed high school along with post-secondary vocational or technical programs in electronics or appliance repair. These programs can help reduce the amount of on-the-job training for entry-level workers and the costs to their employers. Most appliance repair technicians must take on-going education courses to maintain and to sharpen their skills to be able to repair the newest appliance models on the ever changing market.

Appliance Repair Technician Certification

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does require that all appliance repair technicians who buy or work with refrigerants are licensed in proper refrigerant handling. Although formal testing preparation is not mandatory, many employers and trade schools do offer training programs designed for the EPA exam.
